Best Stroller for City Travel: Subway Stairs, Buses & Narrow Sidewalks

City travel with a baby is a series of small physical tests: a flight of subway stairs with no elevator, a turnstile, a bus with three steps, a café door, a crowded sidewalk. The right stroller makes each one a non-event.

What matters in a city

  • Carry weight. If you will lift it with a child in one arm, every pound counts. Under 13 lb is genuinely carryable.
  • A one-hand fold. You never have two free hands at the top of the stairs.
  • Narrow folded width. A slim fold slides past legs on a bus and stands in a corner of a café.
  • Suspension. City sidewalks are cracked, patched and full of curb cuts.

gb Pockit Air All-Terrain: the stairs champion

At 10.4 lb the gb Pockit Air All-Terrain is the lightest stroller we track, and it folds to 13.8 × 11.8 × 7.1 in - small enough to carry up a staircase in one hand. It’s also the most basic: recline, suspension and basket capacity aren’t confirmed, so it suits kids past the nap-in-the-stroller stage.

Mompush Nexis: the best all-rounder

11.5 lb, all-wheel suspension, near-flat recline, usable from birth and a slim 18.1 × 7.9 × 19.1 in fold - for about $200. For a city trip with a baby, it covers more bases than anything else at the price.

MAMAZING Ultra Air: light with a real basket

11.6 lb with all-wheel suspension and a 22 lb basket, about $270. Not car-seat compatible, and the seat starts at 6 months.

Joolz Dot: slimmest fold

The Joolz Dot folds to just 8.4 in thick, which is what you want standing in a hotel-room corner or a restaurant coat check. Suspension and the fold method aren’t confirmed by the manufacturer.

CYBEX Libelle: smallest package overall

1,857 in³ folded, 13.7 lb, and it fits the carry-on box of all 5 airlines we track - the pick if the city trip starts with a flight. It needs two hands to fold.

Riding transit with a stroller

  • Buses: most US transit agencies ask you to fold the stroller when the bus is busy. Practice the fold one-handed before the trip.
  • Subways: elevators exist but are unevenly distributed and often out of service. Assume stairs and pick a weight you can carry.
  • Turnstiles: use the accessible gate - ask staff rather than lifting a loaded stroller over.
  • Cobblestones: if the trip includes older European city centers, read our Europe stroller guide and consider all-wheel suspension.

A carrier is the other half of the answer

Plenty of city parents bring a light stroller and a carrier: stroller for distance and naps, carrier for stairs, crowds and museums. It is often a better setup than trying to find one stroller that does everything.
